Renewing your LEI number
The reference data linked to an LEI number must be revalidated at least once a year. Renewal confirms the organization’s registry information and, where relevant, its parent relationships. The next renewal date is shown in the GLEIF database. If the data is not revalidated by that date, the LEI status becomes lapsed; the LEI number itself stays the same.
What is checked during renewal?
The purpose of renewal is to confirm that the LEI record remains accurate. The information is compared with GLEIF, accessible public registers and other reliable sources.
The review covers the organization’s legal name, company number and registered address. Direct and ultimate consolidating parent data is also checked where applicable. Any confirmed changes are submitted to the GLEIF database.
The organization’s 20-character LEI number does not change during renewal.
How do you renew an LEI number?
If the LEI number is managed by us, renewal takes three steps:
- Enter the LEI number or organization name in the renewal form.
- Review the details and update anything that has changed.
- Select a renewal period and pay for the order.
We may request a supporting document or letter of authorization if the registry data is insufficient or the organization’s structure requires additional verification.
If another provider manages the LEI number, it can be renewed there or transferred to LEI Universal. A transfer does not change the number or the organization’s identity in the GLEIF database.

How does multi-year renewal work?
A multi-year package does not validate the LEI data once for several years. The data is still checked annually.
With a multi-year package, we complete each annual renewal throughout the selected period. If any information has changed or cannot be confirmed from a register, we contact you for the details required.

What happens after the renewal date?
If the LEI data is not revalidated by the due date, the record becomes lapsed in the GLEIF database. The record is not deleted, and the LEI number remains assigned to the same legal entity.
A lapsed LEI number can be renewed at any time. The organization’s details are checked again and the record returns to an active status after renewal. Whether a lapsed LEI can be used for a specific transaction depends on the applicable reporting rules and the organization’s role, so the bank, broker or reporting firm should confirm the requirement for that transaction.

Does the LEI number change when it is renewed?
No. The number remains the same. Renewal updates the reference data, registration status and next renewal date.
When do I need to renew my LEI number?
The LEI number must be renewed every year. You can renew it up to 60 days before the renewal date without losing any remaining validity period. We send our customers a reminder 60 days before the deadline.
How much does LEI renewal cost?

What if the organization no longer needs the LEI number?
If it is not renewed, its status becomes lapsed. The number remains in the GLEIF database and can be renewed later if it is needed again.
